Independent Art Deco Cinema
The Odyssey is a recently restored, independent Art Deco cinema in St Albans. The Odyssey shows a wide selection of films every month. These include new releases, foreign language films, cult films and classics. The large single screen has 426 seats. 216 in the balcony and 210 in the downstairs seating area. The cinema has two bars, one in the foyer and one in the downstairs seating area. Both bars remain open throughout the films.
The historic building was built in the 1908 and was a cinema. After a fire in the 1920's the cinema was restored again in 1931. Thriving in the 1930's, 1940's & 1950's cinema attendance dropped in the 60's & 70's but the venue was host to many rock concerts including The Rolling Stones in 1963. Further decline led to the cinema being shut in the mid 1990's.
After a momentous and vigorous campaign by the St Albans Civic Society, supported by thousands of St Albans inhabitants, James Hannaway, the owner of The Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted and a small team of investors purchased the derelict building on 9 April 2010. James Hannaway fronted the project after the stunning success of the previously restored Art Deco cinema The Rex, in Berkhamsted.
A huge campaign was started to raise the money necessary to restore the cinema to its original 1930s state and on 12 September 2010 the Odeon was renamed The Odyssey. The name being a homage to the locally based film director Stanley Kubrick and his 1968 epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. On 13 May 2013 the building work began to restore the cinema to a single screen picture palace. Its doors finally reopened on 27 November 2014.
